The Heartbeat of Rural Healthcare: Our Community Health Workers
In villages where hospitals are miles away and transportation is scarce, MACHES Uganda’s network of 50+ trained community health workers (CHWs) are the first line of defense for maternal and child health. These local heroes bridge the healthcare gap by:
- Conducting home visits to monitor high-risk pregnancies
- Providing life-saving immunizations to children under 5
- Educating families on nutrition and sanitation practices
- Recognizing danger signs requiring emergency care
Last month alone, our CHWs in Nakaseke District intervened in 12 obstetric emergencies, arranging timely transfers to healthcare facilities. “When I started bleeding at 8 months, Auntie Namukasa recognized the danger and got me to the clinic in time,” shares Annet, a young mother. “Her quick action saved both me and my baby.”
By training local community members as health workers, we create sustainable healthcare solutions that understand cultural contexts and earn community trust. Meet our frontline warriors changing health outcomes one village at a time.
